What is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia?
Prostate Enlargement, medically known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a common male condition caused by various factors such as aging, decreased male hormones, genetics, and lifestyle habits. It results in the enlargement of the prostate gland, which can lead to urinary obstruction, discomfort, pain, and indirectly affect sexual function in men. The prostate gland is normally about the size of a walnut but can grow to the size of an orange or larger. When the prostate enlarges, it can compress the urethra, the tube through which urine passes, leading to weak urine flow, frequent urination, and the need to strain during urination. In severe cases, urinary retention, where the bladder cannot empty, can occur, potentially leading to kidney problems if left untreated.
What causes Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia?
Prostate enlargement is a highly prevalent condition, particularly in elderly men, with growth typically starting in one’s 30s and continuing until around the age of 70. The exact cause of BPH is not fully understood. However, it is known that male hormones play a role in its development, and other factors such as Westernized diets and genetic predisposition are believed to contribute.
